Trail running – making the challenges this sport imposes on body and mind more accessible to an urban population, that is the idea behind the WINDSTOPPER® TRAILRUN WORLDMASTERS. Trail running may typically be associated with mountain regions, but even the Ruhrgebiet - Germany's most densely populated conurbation - offers interesting locations to engage in this endurance sport. What is more, the PHOENIX area in the south-east of Dortmund affords both the structural advantages of an old industrial site and the terrain necessary for a major trail run event.
In November 2010, the former Hoesch premises near Rombergpark will for the second time become the scene of the WINDSTOPPER® Trailrunworldmasters, the Westphalian community being just an example of many former industrial sites where the landscape has dramatically changed in the last couple of years. Areas where industrial facilities used to lend the landscape its character are now being redeveloped and used for modern purposes.
And that's what has happened on the former blast furnace and steelworks property
. A few kilometers from downtown Dortmund, a new location has been developed for new technologies, spare-time activities, but also for modern ways to live and work. Around the part of town named Hörde, at the center of the site, PHOENIX See, PHOENIX West, and PHOENIX Park stretch on an area totaling more than 200 hectares.
While PHOENIX West is reserved for commercial premises and services, PHOENIX See being connected to Rombergpark, Westfalenpark, and Emscheraue, already today offers various opportunities for spare time activities and room to live and work. On the northern part of the site, PHOENIX Park is being created, a park not only supposed to be a place of recreation for local residents, but also structurally an ideal link between surrounding parks and redeveloped areas.
In addition to the necessary terrain for a trail run event, the infrastructural conditions of this location are just as they should be. Due to its central location, the PHOENIX site offers an outstanding connection to the highway system, public transportation, and Dortmund's airport.
